Childhood imagination taken by the digital—an analog comeback begins

According to data from the Korea Box Office Information System (KOBIS) on the 19th, Toy Story 5 drew just over 63,000 viewers as of the previous day and captured a 40.4% share of ticket sales, firmly taking the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office. On the release day, the 17th, it pulled in nearly 94,000 viewers (a 50.1% share) to the big screen, showcasing overwhelming ticket power. This is clear evidence that it has gone beyond a simple numerical advantage to fully seize the dominance of the theater circuit in the second half of the year.

The narrative of this new release strikes sharply at the core of modern society. The desperate survival story and adventures of toys that have had their grip on children’s attention stolen by a smart tablet, Lilypad, mirror the play culture of a rapidly changing digital era. The full lineup of original characters such as Woody and Buzz, who have been part of Pixar’s identity since they first appeared in 1995, stirs deep nostalgia for longtime fans while also giving a weighty meaning to a new generation.

In the face of Pixar’s massive wave of momentum, the rankings of existing releases were inevitably reshuffled. The box office landscape has been moving as follows.

  • 2nd place: Director Yeon Sang-ho’s K-thriller Gunche (around 29,000 daily viewers, 18.0% / cumulative audience of 5.338 million, maintaining a long-running streak)

  • 3rd place: The comedy Wild Thing starring the duo of Kang Dong-won and Oh Jung-se (around 23,000 daily viewers)

  • 4th place: Mystery horror Back Room (around 10,000 daily viewers)

This explosive run at the box office is not expected to slow down for the time being. As of 9 a.m. on the 19th, real-time advance booking rates for Toy Story 5 surged to 47.1% and already secured tickets for more than 188,000 viewers. Meanwhile, the competing titles Gunche posted 8.6% and Wild Thing stayed at 6.7%, making it clear that the upcoming weekend theater scene will become a perfect one-man show led by Pixar.
