A 2.05 million-ticket gamble to jolt an ailing theater scene… The 'golden time' is 10 a.m. on the 8th

The government’s large-scale theater “life support” is set to restart. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Film Council have confirmed a plan to distribute 'second movie ticket discount vouchers' to ease the frozen livelihoods of everyday people and get the film industry’s pulse racing. This is a swift follow-up to the first round of distribution that brought relief to the theater industry in May.

The total amount being released this time is 2.05 million tickets, offering an eye-catching '6,000 won' discount per ticket. Distribution will begin exactly at 10 a.m. on the 8th, and the key variable that will decide the outcome is without question 'first-come, first-served closure'.

Through the official websites and mobile apps of four major nationwide multiplex operators—CGV, Lotte Cinema, Megabox, and CineQ—vouchers are automatically issued at two per person. The program uses a straightforward system that can be applied immediately at the ticket payment stage. However, the event ends as soon as the 'limited quantity' allocated to each theater is sold out, and any unused vouchers left sitting in the coupon box are essentially lost. There is only one way to secure the benefit: 'buy tickets fast'.

Organizers also took care of the ecosystem beyond big multiplexes. At venues dedicated to independent and art films, as well as smaller theaters, they have been steadily offering 'first-come, first-served on-site discounts' since May 13 without any separate limits on showtimes, widening points of contact with audiences.

A full list of participating theaters and real-time 'status of subsidy fund depletion' are transparently disclosed on the Korea Film Council’s official website (www.kofic.or.kr).

According to data from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, immediately after the first round of distribution, theater sales recorded an astonishing 'surge in sales' of 47.9% compared with the previous week within just a single week. The second round distribution is also expected to go beyond simple discounts and serve as a catalyst injecting strong momentum across the overall, sluggish Korean film industry.
