[First reactions from the press screening]
Na Hong-jin’s new film 〈Hope〉, which screened in competition at the 79th Cannes Film Festival, opens July 15. In 〈Hope〉, Beom-seok (Hwang Jung-min), chief of the Hopohang outpost in the Demilitarized Zone, hears from local young men that a tiger has appeared. As the village scrambles into emergency mode, he comes face to face with an unbelievable reality. Here’s what Cineplay reporters thought after watching 〈Hope〉 at the press screening.
Ju Sung-chul / ★★★★ / A clash between aliens and horse-riding nomads — a rural sci-fi rush unlike anything I’ve seen before
Sung Chan-eol / ★★★☆ / Pandora’s box may have held onto hope, but this film leaves only disappointment
Kim Ji-yeon / ★★★☆ / A film that echoes 〈Avatar〉 not just in spectacle, but in the story it aims to tell
