[Press screening reactions]

Opening today, 〈Toy Story 5〉 follows Jessie, Woody, Buzz and the rest of the toys as they reunite for an unpredictable journey after Bonnie's new friend, the smart tablet LilyPad, throws them into a crisis unlike any they have faced before. Cineplay reporters Seong Chan-eol and Kim Ji-yeon share their reactions after attending the press screening.

Seong Chan-eol / ★★★★ / Pure fun for kids, mature enough for adults

Pixar is in a class of its own with Toy Story. It completely banishes the worry that there might be nothing left to say, using the toys to reflect changing times, children growing up, and the emotions of those who must adapt. In particular, the way a child's development is woven into the plot recalls Inside Out 2. The portrayals of electronic-device toys caught between traditional playthings and smart gadgets are quietly impressive. The film's innocent humor and its satirical edge are both enjoyable. Growing up does not always bring comfort, but it's welcome and gratifying to see a series that consoles adults in this way. The film will especially satisfy fans who felt Buzz was underused in the fourth installment.

Kim Ji-yeon / ★★★ / A familiar story and a conventional sequel

Children will enjoy it; adults may leave with questions. Pixar excels at crafting stories that resonate across ages from a child's perspective, so I expected 〈Toy Story 5〉 to deliver a story unique to this era. Instead, it only skims the surface of the theme of the arrival of digital devices. Rather than probing deeper into enduring concerns like the value of play or the tactile value of physical objects, the film settles for a naive binary in which toys are 'on our side,' digital devices are the 'villain,' children who play with toys are 'good kids,' and children who use digital devices are 'bad kids.'
