Hollywood’s long-standing tradition has finally hit a major turning point with the arrival of a seemingly intangible “artificial intelligence (AI) actor.” Beyond a mere technical experiment or a bit part, the entertainment industry worldwide was thrown into turmoil after the first case was announced of an AI performer taking the main title role in a feature film.

The Birth of a Fictional Leading Role: A Paradigm Shift That Takes Over the Screen
According to Deadline, a leading U.S. entertainment outlet, “Tilly Noud,” at the center of the Hollywood controversy, was swiftly tapped as the sole lead for a new comedy film, “Misaligned.” The story takes a bold turn by depicting an AI with no body and no memories from childhood that, only after an unexpected infection by a malicious bot, suddenly discovers human desires and impulses. The megaphone and the steering wheel of production were secured by Particle6, a British production company led by Dutch-born actor and producer “Eline van der Velden.”
Van der Velden, who first introduced “Tilly Noud” to the public last October at the Zurich Film Festival in Switzerland, said of this project, “It will be a deeply self-aware masterpiece where playful cleverness and confusion coexist in a way that catches the audience off guard,” adding to her strong confidence.
But the revolutionary move immediately triggered a strong backlash. The U.S. actors’ and broadcasters’ labor union (“SAG-AFTRA”) dismissed it in an official statement, saying, “Noud cannot ever be recognized as an actor in the true sense.” It went further, calling the move “a deception that unlawfully steals the sweat and tears of ‘real actors’ and pushes their livelihoods to the brink,” and said it would “seriously damage the essence of the unique artistry that only humans possess,” launching sharp criticism.
Facing a barrage of criticism, van der Velden offered a pointed rebuttal. “The public will still crave the presence of ‘real actors’ like Scarlett Johansson or Ryan Reynolds,” she said, making clear that AI is not a substitute but a new tool. She added, “It’s only an evolved directing approach that further refines the acting spectrum of computer-generated (CG) characters, the way it breathes life into Elsa in the animated film ‘Frozen.’” She warned against excessive fear of technological progress.
