The film 〈MARTY SUPREME〉, which has drawn more than 100,000 moviegoers in South Korea, has unveiled new behind-the-scenes details.

One behind-the-scenes detail is that the production cast a real Japanese professional table tennis player as Marty’s rival, Endo. Kawaguchi Goto, who plays Endo, turned professional in 2019 and won the bronze medal in the men’s team event at the 2022 Summer Deaflympics. He had no prior acting experience. He said that when he was offered the role he did not even know who Timothée Chalamet was and initially thought the offer might be a scam. Drawing on his real match experience, he helped stage an intense table-tennis showdown with Timothée Chalamet that heightened the film’s tension.

Another behind-the-scenes detail is a surprise vocal cameo by Hollywood star Robert Pattinson. Pattinson, who first connected with director Josh Safdie through the 2018 film 〈Good Time〉, appears early in the film as the in-arena announcer’s voice during the British Open semifinal scene. While filming the table tennis tournament scene, Safdie asked Pattinson—who had stopped by the set—to voice the British referee on the spot, and Pattinson readily agreed, creating a surprise Easter egg for audiences.

The final behind-the-scenes story involves Timothée Chalamet’s special makeup, which even fooled veteran actress Gwyneth Paltrow. To convey the years of hardship Marty endured while juggling life as a table tennis player and a shoe salesman, the makeup team applied delicate prosthetic work to create acne scars and rough skin on his face. An anecdote emerged that Paltrow, who worked closely with Chalamet, believed the makeup was his actual skin and, out of concern, seriously recommended that he get skin treatment, prompting laughter from the crew.

The film 〈MARTY SUPREME〉 is now showing in theaters.
