Anthony Hopkins’ life story … ‘Life Is a Dream,’ a song he kept hidden for 60 years, tops the charts

Legendary British actor Anthony Hopkins, 86, has revealed a musical talent he kept hidden behind his acting career. He recently released his first album as a composer through the renowned classical label Decca Classics. The album features 12 orchestral works he composed privately over six decades, drawing intense attention from critics and audiences alike.

The melodies of an 86-year-old master, spanning life and death

The album, performed by Grammy Award-winning maestro Gustavo Dudamel and the British Philharmonia Orchestra, shot to No. 1 on the weekly classical-music chart of the U.K. Official Charts shortly after its release. In a media interview, Hopkins explained why he titled the album Life Is a Dream: “Life Is a Dream is a sincere love letter to my life.”

“As I entered the twilight of my life, I found myself constantly wrestling with the essence of life and death,” he said. “Most of the tracks take this as their theme, but they capture a beautiful process of acceptance that is by no means depressing.” He added a philosophical insight: “Our lives are an unending series of goodbyes. The great goodbye that comes at the end of life’s ‘gift’ is death.”

A 60-year musical journey completed through self-study

The two-time Academy Award winner for best actor, recognized for The Silence of the Lambs and The Father, has dominated the screen and stage for more than 60 years. But his true passion was music, which he had nurtured since his teens. Remarkably, he is a self-taught composer who never received formal music training. He began playing improvisations on the piano at age 4 and composed music for local theater productions as a teenager.

After bringing melodies he had created alone at age 86 to the world, he recounted, “I had not originally intended to release an album.” A chance rapport with conductor Dudamel, he said, led to the miracle of producing the album. Hopkins did not hide his emotion, saying, “The moment a world-class orchestra played my music was simply like a wondrous dream.”

A tribute shaped by nostalgia and Romanticism

His creative process is not confined by the strictures of sheet music. As he puts it, “Images that bloom in my mind and the vivid memories tied to them are the source of my compositions.” In the album, the streets, meadows and mountain ranges of his Welsh hometown in the 1940s come vividly back to life through melody. In particular, My Fatherland is a masterful work that weaves his deep nostalgia for his baker father and homeland into traditional Welsh melodies.

Hopkins has also said he draws deep inspiration from Edward Elgar, the great Romantic composer of his homeland, and has embedded tributes to the earlier musician throughout the album. The flowing strings and clarinet melodies of Bracken Road, which evokes memories of his hometown, carry on the romantic mood of Elgar’s Symphony No. 1 in full. Hopkins, who continues to sketch improvisations, expressed an undiminished artistic desire to “expand beyond classical music into film scores.”
