The journey of an unknown singer who captivated Cannes returns to the screen
The Coen brothers, Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, two of Hollywood’s most acclaimed filmmakers, are bringing their first musical, ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’ (2013), back to theaters exclusively at CGV on the 2nd of next month in a 4K-remastered version. Distributors Andamiro and The Title announced the news on the 4th, promising a return to theaters of the film’s feast of folk music after 12 years.
‘Inside Llewyn Davis’, which first premiered in South Korea in 2014, is set in New York’s Greenwich Village in 1961, amid a surge of interest in folk music. The film vividly portrays the grueling weeklong journey of Llewyn Davis, an unknown folk singer who relies on his guitar and drifts from one person’s couch to another. Even as he runs up against the harsh realities of life, he cannot let go of his passion for music. The Coen brothers capture the bittersweet underside of the artist’s life with their signature blend of cynical yet warm humor, earning widespread critical acclaim.
The film was directed and written by the Coen brothers, whose many acclaimed works include ‘No Country for Old Men’ (2007) and ‘Fargo’ (1996), adding to its artistic achievement. In particular, it won the Grand Prix at the 66th Cannes Film Festival in 2013, earning international recognition for its place in film history.
The cast is equally impressive. Oscar Isaac, whose profile has risen with films including ‘Dune’ (2021) and the upcoming ‘Frankenstein’ (2025), plays Davis, delivering a fully committed performance along with accomplished guitar playing and singing. The film is further enriched by a host of acclaimed Hollywood actors, including Carey Mulligan, who has joined the Netflix series ‘Beef 2’, as well as Justin Timberlake, Adam Driver and John Goodman.
The new 4K-remastered version is set to render the bleak winter scenery and vintage color palette of 1960s New York with greater clarity. Expectations are also building among movie fans, who will be able to experience the film’s highlight—the live folk music performances—in vivid detail through the theater’s rich sound system.
