Remembering the godfather of laughter… ‘2026 Bongseonghakdang’ and tribute performances planned

KBS 2TV’s ‘Immortal Songs’ is preparing a special occasion to mark the first anniversary of the death of the late ‘Jeon Yoo-seong,’ a towering figure in Korean comedy. KBS officially announced on the 6th that the episode airing on the 7th will be titled ‘A Jeon Yoo-seong Special Without Jeon Yoo-seong.’

Leading the tribute performances is singer ‘Yang Hee-eun,’ who shared a close friendship with Jeon for more than half a century—55 years. Joining her are magician ‘Lee Eun-gyeol,’ who became acquainted with Jeon through his sponsorship of magic competitions and carried his coffin at the funeral, and acclaimed vocalists ‘Kwon In-ha’ and ‘Han Young-ae,’ who will bring deeply moving performances.

Performances by younger comedians who grew up on the foundation Jeon built will also follow. ‘Kim Jeong-ryeol,’ ‘Lee Kyung-sil,’ ‘Cho Hye-ryun,’ ‘Park Joon-hyung,’ ‘Zoltan’ (Lee Jae-hyung, Han Hyun-min and Jeong Jin-wook), ‘Ahn Young-mi’ and ‘Song Pil-geun’ will all take part, presenting special segments including ‘2026 Bongseonghakdang’ and turning their respect for their teacher and senior into laughter.

Comedian ‘Kim Shin-young,’ Jeon’s protégé who stayed quietly by his side until his final moments, will join the host desk as a special MC. Kim Shin-young will share the stage with regular hosts ‘Shin Dong-yup,’ ‘Kim Joon-hyun’ and ‘Lee Chan-won’ to deliver both emotion and humor.

Jeon Yoo-seong, who died last September at age 76 after his pneumothorax worsened, coined the word “comedian” during his lifetime and pioneered comedy experiments centered on small theaters, leaving a major mark on Korean culture. At the 14th ‘Busan International Comedy Festival’ held this past August, the tribute performance ‘A Jeon Yoo-seong Show Without Jeon Yoo-seong’ was also staged to great success.
