[Seong Chan-eol’s Comics] I hesitated to recommend it, but 30,000 moviegoers leaves me saying ‘Give it a try’: 「The Dangers in My Heart」

[Seong Chan-eol’s Comics] I hesitated to recommend it, but 30,000 moviegoers leaves me saying ‘Give it a try’: 「The Dangers in My Heart」

I go crazy for subculture. I check out anything with fresh stories, settings or characters — not only films but webtoons, games, comics and animation. I entered the world of fandom through comics: as an adult I read comics as e-books and webtoons on my smartphone, a self-described 'kidult.' But it's less fun alone. I write Seong Chan-eol's Comics to share things that are more enjoyable together, seen from the perspective of an omnivorous fan.
To be frank, this is one of my current favorite comics, but it’s one I avoided writing about for a while. It’s wildly fun and genuinely heart-fluttering, but the barrier to entry is high. If even I, a fan of the series, felt that hesitation, I wasn’t sure how many readers would go along with it.

Cineplay and House Travel teamed up for a Hong Kong movie tour, their fifth trip. The core theme of this tour was the meeting of Hong Kong’s past and present through film. From John Woo’s 〈A Better Tomorrow〉 (1990), set in 1960s Hong Kong and starring Tony Leung Chiu-wai, to 〈The King of Comedy〉...

Hong Kong Retro Movie Tour ② “Comedy King,” Stephen Chow’s Film Where You Never Get Tired of Just Staring at the Sea All Day at Sek O Beach

Among Hong Kong films, it seems there is none that so deeply absorbs the mood of a place as much as Comedy King. With the exception of the film sets and a nightclub or two, it was shot almost entirely at Sek O Beach, located at the far southeastern tip of Hong Kong Island.

Choo A-young's Music Box: Steven Spielberg and John Williams Reunite for Their 30th Film, 〈Disclosure Day〉

I am captivated by music in film. Music often conveys a character's intimate emotions that images and dialogue alone cannot fully express. It can be a window into a creator's hidden intent. For me, understanding film music is one path to understanding the film itself.

The 〈strong〉Chungchungchung〈/strong〉 (also rendered as 〈strong〉Chung Chung Chung〈/strong〉)—made with the 2018 murder case in Washington, Benton as its inspiration—depicts a catastrophe sparked by the tangled, competing desires of three children.
How did the two of you interpret and approach your respective characters. The name “Courage” suggests an energy that’s overflowing, but the character is also a “pathetic” youth who doesn’t have real, powerful force.

[Interview] Catching This Year’s Debut, a Y2K-Era Sensibility: Director Han Chang-rok, Actors Joo Min-hyung and Baek Ji-hye, Part 1

Inspired by a murder case in Washington, Benton in 2018, 〈Choong-Choong-Choong〉 portrays a catastrophe sparked by the intersecting desires of three kids.
Retro is the trend. In the fashion, music and props of young people in their 20s, there’s nowhere that a Y2K sensibility hasn’t managed to seep in. Director Han Chang-rok, born in 1990 and a graduate of the Korea National University of Arts film school, pulls this retro sensibility straight onto...
