Naver Webtoon Entertainment, the parent company of Webtoon, announced a global partnership with The Walt Disney Company, resulting in a record stock surge of over 80% in just one day on the New York Stock Exchange.
On the 13th (local time), Webtoon Entertainment closed at $16.96 on the New York Stock Exchange. This represents an 81.2% increase from the previous session, demonstrating the significant impact of the partnership announcement with Disney.
Start of Webtoon Adaptations of Disney and Marvel IPs
Webtoon Entertainment officially announced the global partnership with The Walt Disney Company after the market closed the previous day. Through this agreement, popular intellectual properties (IPs) from Disney and Marvel, including movies and dramas, will be adapted into webtoons in the United States.
The first works to be adapted into webtoons are five titles including 'Avengers', 'The Amazing Spider-Man', and 'Star Wars'. These are all representative blockbuster IPs with massive fan bases worldwide, and there is great industry interest in what kind of synergy this transformation into webtoons will create.
Plans for a Disney Exclusive Section and 100 Collaborative Series
Webtoon Entertainment revealed ambitious plans to create a separate Disney exclusive section in their English application and to showcase about 100 collaborative series. This indicates that it is not just a one-time collaboration but a long-term and systematic partnership.
The operation of the Disney exclusive section is being evaluated as a new attempt to build a premium content area within the webtoon platform. Through this, Webtoon Entertainment is expected to attract not only existing webtoon readers but also Disney fans.
Positive Evaluations from Wall Street
Wall Street analysts view the partnership with Disney as a significant event that demonstrates the increased value of the webtoon platform. Investment bank Raymond James stated in The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) that "Disney's approval stamp, which is very stringent for its IP distribution, shows the value of the webtoon platform."
In particular, they analyzed that "it simultaneously shows the connection to the hard-to-reach customer base that webtoons possess," deeming this partnership a major achievement for Webtoon Entertainment. This is interpreted as a sign that webtoons have been recognized as an important pillar of the global entertainment ecosystem, beyond just being a simple comic platform.

Disney's Stringent IP Management Proves Its Value
Disney is known in the industry for being very stringent in managing its IP. They apply strict standards when collaborating with any platform or partner and thoroughly review the potential for brand value degradation. The fact that Disney chose Webtoon Entertainment as a partner signifies that the quality and potential of the webtoon platform have been officially recognized.
This is regarded as a symbolic event showing that webtoons are no longer niche market content but have established themselves as mainstream entertainment.
Reversal of Stock Price After Initial Underperformance Post-Listing
Webtoon Entertainment was listed on the Nasdaq market of the New York Stock Exchange in June last year. At that time, the offering price was $21, acknowledging a high valuation of around 4 trillion won, but the stock price continued to decline as performance fell short of expectations.
In the first half of this year, the stock price lingered around $10, showing a significant difference from the expectations at the time of listing. Investors recognized the growth potential of the webtoon market but had doubts about its ability to generate actual profits.
Ongoing Deficit Situation and Future Challenges
Despite the stock surge, Webtoon Entertainment still has many challenges to address. The company announced that its operating loss for the second quarter was tentatively estimated at $8.763 million (approximately 1.23 billion won). This indicates that they are still struggling to secure profitability.
It seems that it will take time for the partnership with Disney to translate into actual profits, and investors are paying close attention to what specific results this collaboration can yield.
