〈Yangyang〉 is a cinematic essay that draws attention with its unique direction, from lyrical animation that fills the absence to diverse music. 〈Yangyang〉 is a documentary that uncovers the many names that were not recorded along with the erased traces of 'Juyeon', who first learns of her aunt 'Jiyoung' through a late-night phone call from her father. It is the debut work of director Yang Juyeon, selected by prestigious film festivals both domestically and internationally, including the 32nd Hot Docs International Documentary Festival.
〈Yangyang〉 uncovers the existence of aunt 'Jiyoung', which has become a family secret, using animation to restore the narrative of a non-existent character, conveying novelty. The film expresses the narrative of 'Jiyoung', who disappeared from family history due to having taken her own life, through symbols of 'black water' and 'box', presenting a multidimensional story of the film that records her time, which had been halted by her family.

Additionally, the animation features both the present 'Juyeon' tracing back the traces of her aunt and the 'Jiyoung' left in the past, emphasizing the emotional solidarity of women across generations by newly placing characters that cannot coexist. Director Yang Juyeon explained her directorial intent, saying, "The aunt in the photo seemed to be gazing at me from a place where her time had stopped. I wanted to see the moving aunt. Even if it wasn't a big movement, I felt a growing desire for her actions, walking somewhere and flowing."
Meanwhile, the film features music by award-winning music director Lee Min-hwi, who has worked on various well-made independent films such as 〈A Fantasia of Midsummer〉 and 〈Two Women Wearing the Same Underwear〉, conveying the subtle emotional changes of 'Juyeon' through various sounds, enhancing the immersion of the film. The uniquely directed cinematic essay 〈Yangyang〉 will be released on October 22, meeting audiences.
