
This year, the masterpiece of director Jafar Panahi, 〈It Was Just an Accident〉 (It Was Just an Accident), which won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, is on the verge of surpassing 40,000 viewers. On the 28th (local time), it was announced that it has been nominated in three categories: International Feature Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay at the 2025 Gotham Awards, thus beginning its Oscar race. Notably, in the International Feature Film category, it will compete against Park Chan-wook's 〈Decision to Leave〉, drawing attention.
〈It Was Just an Accident〉 is a revenge drama that begins when 'Vahid', who returned to an ordinary life, discovers the man who led him to hell through a sound. Selected for the competition section of the 78th Cannes Film Festival, it has received rave reviews from international media and critics, being called "Jafar Panahi's best work" and "a new world opened by Jafar Panahi", and won the prestigious Palme d'Or. With this, director Jafar Panahi has achieved the 'Triple Crown' record of winning the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival, and the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Only four directors in the history of cinema have achieved this record, and among current directors, Jafar Panahi is the only one.
