The film industry's rebel and master, Quentin Tarantino, unleashed a scathing critique bordering on personal attack against actor Paul Dano from the 21st century masterpiece 'There Will Be Blood'.
On the 4th (local time), Tarantino appeared on the 'Bret Easton Ellis Podcast' and ranked Paul Thomas Anderson's 2007 film 'There Will Be Blood' 5th in his selection of 'The 10 Best Movies of the 21st Century'.
◆ "Dano is a Giant Flaw... Austin Butler is Better"
Tarantino pointed out, "This movie could have been 1st or 2nd, but there is one giant flaw. That flaw is Paul Dano."
He stated, "This movie should have been a two-hander with Daniel Day-Lewis, but Dano was too weak," adding, "He is just a weak and uninteresting actor. If Austin Butler had played that role, it would have been great."
◆ "The Weakest Male Actor in the SAG"
When host Ellis defended Dano by saying, "Isn't it that Dano was overshadowed by the massive performance of Daniel Day-Lewis?", Tarantino raised his voice instead.
He responded, "Day-Lewis doesn't need a strong counterpart for his performance, but the film itself needs a strong counterpart," questioning, "Is that why you brought in the weakest male actor in the SAG to co-star?" He added that he has not seen any performances he liked from Dano in other works either.
◆ Film Industry: "Rude Remarks" vs "Director's Conviction"
Tarantino's remarks immediately heated up social media. Many film fans and critics criticized the director's comments as excessively rude, stating, "Paul Dano is a great actor who has shown delicate performances in 'Little Miss Sunshine', 'The Batman', and Spielberg's 'The Fabelmans'."
In particular, Dano's neurotic and vile performance in 'There Will Be Blood' has been praised as the best ensemble contrasting with Daniel Day-Lewis's explosive energy, further escalating the controversy.
Currently, Paul Dano's representative has not issued any official statement regarding Tarantino's remarks.
