'Hanran' Director Ha Myung-mi Named Bechdelian Producer of the Year for Yeongdeokdang Hall

Director Ha Myung-mi was selected as Bechdelian Producer of the Year.

'Bechdel Day 2026' selected director Ha Myung-mi of Hanran in the producer category for the year. Hosted and organized by the Directors Guild of Korea (DGK), 'Bechdel Day' is a content festival that spotlights the values of gender equality and cultural diversity through Korean films and series. Each year, it selects 'Bechdel Choice 10,' works that have shown equitable representation and introduced new women-centered narratives, and 'Bechdelian,' the creators who stand out for their contributions in the director, writer, actor, and producer categories.

Hanran was selected for 'Bechdel Choice 10,' and director Ha Myung-mi, who handled the film's directing, screenplay, and production for Hanran, was named Bechdelian in the producer category. The jury member, Lee Anna, CEO of Annapurna Film, said, “She brought to the center of the screen the lives and memories of women who had stayed on the margins of history,” adding, “By seeing the creator’s vision through to the end, she expanded the possibilities of women’s storytelling and the diversity of Korean cinema.”

Hanran tells the story of mother Ajin (Kim Hyang-gi) and six-year-old daughter Haesaeng (Kim Min-chae), who are separated as they flee to Mount Hallasan while hiding from suppression forces in Jeju in 1948. On the Bechdelian selection, Director Ha Myung-mi said, “Within the history of Jeju April 3, I wanted to place at the center of the film the lives of women and children who were unable to leave even their names behind. It is even more meaningful that Hanran was selected as an equitable-gender work, and that the production process—up to bringing the film to the world—was recognized as well. I hope this selection will give more audiences a chance to meet Ajin and Haesaeng, and to keep for a long time the many lives and memories they symbolize.”

'Bechdel Day 2026' will be held at Yonamjang in Yeonnam-dong, Seodaemun District, Seoul, from August 29 to 30.
