"The Christmas we know is covered in sparkling decorations and carols. But beneath that, there was a desperate struggle for survival." Hollywood icon Kevin Costner (70) has put on the lens of history instead of a cowboy hat to seek the origins of Christmas.
According to industry reports on the 10th, the two-hour special documentary 'Kevin Costner Presents: The First Christmas', which aired on ABC last night (9th), resonated deeply with viewers.
◆ "I Wanted to Go Below the Surface"
In an interview with Fox News Digital, Costner clarified his intentions for the project. He stated, "I wanted to go beyond the decorations that people bring out every holiday. I wanted to go below the surface of the story and see the 'Real' history."
The program, based on the advice of prominent Catholic and Protestant theologians, faithfully followed the biblical story while shedding light on the historical context that has been overlooked. It particularly emphasized that the brutal political threats of King Herod, the physical hardships faced by the pregnant Mary and Joseph, and the journey of the Magi are not just simple fairy tales but 'actual events'.
◆ The Boy Who Cried "Hark!" Becomes a Master
Costner added authenticity by sharing episodes from his childhood in the program. He recalled, "I played the role of a shepherd in the church Christmas play when I was young, and my line was just one, 'Hark'."
He expressed awe at the story of Jesus' birth he encountered again at the age of 70, stating through America Magazine, "The story of the Bible is fantastic in itself. I got the opportunity to reinvest in this most important story that has lasted for centuries."
◆ Available for Streaming Starting Today
'The First Christmas', which contains the vivid story behind the birth of the most important figure in history, believed by one-third of the world's population, will be streaming on Disney+ and Hulu starting today (10th) for viewers who missed the original broadcast.
