Insiders from 'MAGA' (Make America Great Again), known as President Trump's core supporters, are publicly expressing opposition to Netflix's acquisition of Warner Brothers Discovery. They are reportedly raising concerns about the relationship between Netflix and the Democratic Party, effectively urging the Trump administration to deny approval.
According to a report by the Washington Post on the 9th (local time), hardline right-wing activist Jack Posobiec claimed on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that "this is a problem with Obama-affiliated individuals taking control of the media." He pointed out that Netflix signed a contract with former President Barack Obama and his wife’s production company 'Higher Ground'(Higher Ground) in 2018.
Conservative podcast host Benny Johnson also strongly criticized the deal. He warned on X that it would be "the most dangerous media merger in American history," stating that "Netflix, run by major Democratic donors, will monopolize children's entertainment."
Laura Loomer, a 'MAGA' influencer known to exert influence even within the White House, highlighted that Susan Rice, who served as National Security Advisor during the Obama administration, is currently a member of Netflix's board. He also raised the claim that this acquisition is connected to former First Lady Michelle Obama's potential 2028 presidential run.
The Washington Post analyzed that the statements from these Trump supporters are ultimately an attempt to influence the Trump administration, which holds the final approval rights for this massive deal.
On the 7th, President Trump, while meeting with reporters, described the Netflix-Warner acquisition agreement as "a really great achievement," but also expressed caution, saying, "We need to see how it goes as the market share becomes too large."
Earlier, Netflix announced on the 5th that it had finalized a deal to acquire Warner Brothers' film and TV studios and core business segments, including HBO Max, for $72 billion (approximately 106 trillion won). If the two companies merge, it is expected to dominate over 30% of the U.S. subscription streaming market.
This merger proposal must receive approval from the U.S. federal government to be officially executed.
