"I would rather you hate me than wish I were alive." This desperate line from the movie has turned into the most horrific tragedy in reality. The perpetrator who killed Hollywood master director Rob Reiner (78) and his wife is none other than their son Nick Reiner (32), whom they tried to heal through their films.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) announced on the 15th (local time) that they had arrested Nick Reiner on suspicion of murdering his parents, Rob Reiner and his wife Michelle Singer Reiner (68).
⬦ The Tragic True Story of the Movie 〈Charlie〉... A Life Stained by Drugs and Homelessness
According to reports from local media on the 15th (local time), Nick fell into drugs as a teenager, causing pain to his family, and from around the age of 15, he repeatedly visited rehabilitation centers but eventually rejected them and continued living on the streets.
After overcoming drug addiction, Nick wrote the screenplay for the movie 〈Charlie〉(Being Charlie), which was based on his experiences with addiction and his relationship with his father, with director Reiner taking the helm for its release in 2015. The film dealt with the conflict between a successful actor with political ambitions and his drug-addicted son.

The scene in which the father tells his son, "I would rather you hate me than wish I were alive," is said to have been inspired by a conversation that actually took place between the two.
In a 2016 media interview, Nick revealed that he did not form a "sufficient bond" with his father during his upbringing. He mentioned that his decision to stop using heroin was due to a realistic awakening, stating, "I was tired of that life. I grew up in a good family and should not have been living on the streets or in homeless shelters." He also disclosed that during his difficult times with addiction, his parents chose homelessness over rehabilitation facilities, and he had experiences where he almost lost his life on the streets.
In that interview, director Reiner expressed regret for prioritizing the advice of rehabilitation professionals over his son's story, recalling, "We were desperate and followed the words of qualified people. We should have listened to our son back then." The father-son duo stated that their experience of making a film together significantly contributed to healing past wounds and strengthening their relationship.

In a 2016 interview, director Reiner commented on his son Nick, saying, "If the opportunity arises to work with him again, I would gladly do so, but I also respect his desire to carve out his own path. He is a genius, talented, and will find his own way."
The most recent instance of Nick appearing publicly with his father was in September of this year when he attended the premiere of the movie 〈Spinal Tap 2〉 with his family.
The Los Angeles Police Department announced that they had arrested Nick the previous day on suspicion of murdering his parents, but did not disclose details regarding the motive or the circumstances of the incident. Director Reiner and his wife Michelle Singer Reiner were found dead at their Los Angeles home around 3:30 PM the previous day, having been stabbed. They were 78 and 68 years old, respectively.
