Wiz Khalifa (38), the American rapper known as the 'Cannabis Evangelist', has been sentenced to prison in Romania. The consequences of smoking cannabis on stage were harsher than expected. However, the individual in question is enjoying a free life on the other side of the world in the U.S., raising concerns about the actual imprisonment.
According to TMZ and local Romanian media on the 18th (local time), the Constanța Court of Appeals in Romania sentenced Wiz Khalifa to 9 months in prison for drug possession charges. This overturns the previous ruling by a lower court in April that imposed a fine of 3,600 lei (approximately $830).
◆ The Butterfly Effect Caused by 'A Puff' on Stage
The incident dates back to July 2024. Wiz Khalifa was arrested by local police while smoking cannabis during his performance at the 'Beach, Please! Festival' in Costinești, Romania. According to prosecutors, he was in possession of more than 18 grams of cannabis at the time. The Romanian Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) appealed, arguing that the fine imposed in the first trial was too light, and the appellate court applied Romanian law 143/2000 (illegal possession of dangerous drugs) to impose a prison sentence. Romania is a 'drug-free country' in Europe, where possession of cannabis for personal use can lead to a maximum of 2 years in prison.
◆ Will Wiz in America Go to Jail?
Legally, this ruling is 'final' within Romania. However, sources close to Wiz Khalifa told TMZ, "Nothing is confirmed yet. Our team is going through the appeal process," indicating a legal battle ahead. Currently, Wiz Khalifa is staying in the U.S. On the day before the ruling, the 17th, he streamed games for two and a half hours on Twitch and made a surprise appearance at rapper Gunna's concert in Los Angeles, showcasing his well-being. Experts believe that since he is a U.S. citizen and the charges are merely for cannabis possession, the likelihood of U.S. authorities responding to Romania's extradition request is low.
◆ "I Had No Intention to Disrespect Romania" But...
Wiz Khalifa apologized via X (formerly Twitter) immediately after his arrest, stating, "I had no intention to disrespect the Romanian nation." However, he could not escape the legal net of Eastern European countries that maintain strict penalties, unlike some Western European countries or certain U.S. states. The hip-hop community is focused on how he will break free from this '9-month prison' chain, living a free-spirited life like his global hit song 'Young, Wild & Free.'
