Irish actor Paul Mescal recently stated in an interview with 'The Guardian' that after completing the promotion for Chloé Zhao's upcoming project 〈Hamnet〉, he plans to reduce public activities until the filming of the Beatles biopic scheduled for 2028. He cited fatigue from a high-intensity schedule over the past few years and concerns about his image being overly consumed by the public.
The background of this decision stems from the physical and mental fatigue caused by the intense schedule over the past few years, along with worries about his image being excessively consumed by the public. Mescal candidly expressed his feelings while discussing life and rest with fellow actor Josh O'Connor, saying, "I hope that after the promotion for 〈Hamnet〉, no one will see me for a while." He added, "This time will be a break for the public from me, and a break for me from the public."
Paul Mescal particularly expressed the acting struggles he felt while taking on emotionally draining works like 〈The History of Sound〉. He stated, "I don't want to resent the acting I love," and although he fears losing the 'presentness' of being away from the public's attention as an actor, he showed a willingness to temporarily set that flow aside if necessary. This can be interpreted as Mescal's own coping mechanism regarding the 'burnout' issue that has become a hot topic among Hollywood stars recently.
Since gaining worldwide attention in 2020 with the drama 〈Normal People〉, Paul Mescal has continuously showcased major works such as 〈Aftersun〉, 〈All of Us Strangers〉, and 〈Gladiator 2〉. Recently, he has been mentioned as a strong contender for the next Academy Award while playing the role of William Shakespeare in 〈Hamnet〉 alongside Jessie Buckley.
His comeback project, a four-part Beatles biopic directed by Sam Mendes, is a major project that has received permission from the Beatles to depict the members' lives and music rights for the first time. Mescal is set to play the role of Paul McCartney, collaborating with Harris Dickinson (John Lennon), Joseph Quinn (George Harrison), and Barry Keoghan (Ringo Starr). While he will intermittently continue filming Richard Linklater's long-term project 〈Merrily We Roll Along〉, his choice to take time to recharge without any major new works has received support from fans.
