"Receiving 24-Hour Nurse Care"... Phil Collins Talks About His Battle, Sobriety, and 'Music'

"It felt like everything that could go wrong went wrong. But I want to walk again, and I want to make music again."

The pop legend and leader of the rock band Genesis Phil Collins (74) broke his silence and candidly shared his health status and the struggles he faced during his battle.

According to the BBC on the 22nd (Korean time), Phil Collins confessed in the podcast 'Eras: Phil Collins' interview released on the 21st, "The past few years have been really difficult and frustrating times."

◆ "24-Hour Nurse on Duty... Five Knee Surgeries"

Phil Collins is currently receiving help from a nurse who is on duty 24 hours a day. He stated, "The nurse makes sure I take my medication properly," adding, "I have had serious issues with my knee and have undergone five surgeries." Since suffering a spinal injury in 2007, he has long relied on a cane due to 'drop foot' symptoms, but fortunately, after surgery, his condition has improved, and he reported, "Now I can walk with the help of crutches or assistive devices." This proves that the rumors of him being in hospice care last July were unfounded and that it was merely a surgical hospitalization.

◆ "Quit Day Drinking and Have Been Sober for Two Years"

He candidly acknowledged his past mistakes. He reflected, "I wasn't the type to drink all night, but I think I drank too much during the day," recalling his past when he suffered kidney damage due to excessive drinking and ended up in the hospital. To make matters worse, he contracted COVID-19 while in the hospital, experiencing the worst period of his life, but he is currently successfully maintaining sobriety for two years.

◆ Dreaming of the Studio Again

Though his body has weakened, his passion for music remains strong. He expressed, "If I can move completely and get healthy, I want to go into the studio and create new music. Whether I can do it or not, I will have to try it myself," leaving the possibility of a comeback after retirement open.
