
Cannes Film Festival Palme d'Or winner Sean Baker and Academy Award-winning actress Michelle Yeoh have garnered attention with their new work 'Sandiwara', which showcases Yeoh's diverse acting transformations in a short film.
According to reports from Variety and other foreign media on the 6th (Korean time), the film 'Sandiwara' will have its world premiere at the 76th Berlin International Film Festival on February 13. This screening will be held as a special screening to commemorate Yeoh being selected as this year's 'Honorary Golden Bear' awardee at the Berlin Film Festival.
◆ Five Faces of the Night Market
'Sandiwara' is a short film shot on an iPhone by director Sean Baker, similar to his earlier work 'Tangerine'. The main highlight is Yeoh's performance in five roles. The film is set against the backdrop of a vibrant night market in Penang, Malaysia, where Yeoh portrays five characters, each with different stories and personalities, showcasing various aspects of Malaysian culture. The title 'Sandiwara' means 'drama' or 'theater' in Malay.
◆ The Meeting of Fashion and Film
This project was produced as part of the artist residency program of the British fashion house 'Self-Portrait'. Director Sean Baker stated, "Together with Michelle Yeoh, we created immersive cinema that transcends the traditional format of fashion films in her hometown of Penang." After the screening in Berlin on the 13th, there will be a conversation with the audience featuring Sean Baker and Michelle Yeoh.
