SM Entertainment (co-CEOs Jang Cheol-hyuk and Tak Young-jun) has received a Presidential Commendation in recognition of the results of its 12 years of social contribution work.
K-pop powerhouse’s positive impact recognized with Presidential Commendation
SM received the Presidential Commendation at the 2026 Korea Sharing Awards ceremony, held on the 5th at the KBS Annex Public Hall. Now in its 15th year, the ceremony is the most prestigious event in the social contribution field, co-hosted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) and the Community Chest of Korea. It honors individuals who have contributed to improving public welfare through sharing their time and resources. Co-CEO Jang Cheol-hyuk, who attended the ceremony, said, "This was possible thanks to our employees and artists, who deeply believe in the value of sharing and took part of their own accord, as well as our partner organizations, which have stood by us as steadfast partners." He pledged to build a sustainable future through music and culture.
250,000 people supported since SMile launched, with practical help in building careers
The award recognizes the impact of the company’s ongoing giving efforts, launched in 2014 with its own social contribution brand, SMile, and built on its expertise in culture and the arts. Over the past 12 years, SM has supported about 250,000 people from vulnerable communities and young people in South Korea and abroad. In particular, the SMile Music Festival, a program that develops young musical talent, goes beyond basic educational support. Graduates have gone on to arts high schools and universities or become professionals in the music industry, making the program a springboard for real career opportunities and establishing it as a leading model for social contribution through culture and the arts in South Korea.
Broad efforts span global giving and biodiversity conservation
A virtuous cycle of giving time and effort, with employees and artists taking part directly, is another highlight. Led by the SMile Social Volunteer Group, which brings together all affiliates, the company runs the SMile for U campaign in partnership with UNICEF Korea to teach music to children in Asia. Other initiatives include creating and maintaining Gwangya Forest to conserve urban biodiversity, and operating SMile WoW Art School, a K-pop-focused program for children and teenagers who use cochlear implants or hearing aids. The company is taking the lead in creating social value across a range of areas by making full use of its infrastructure.
