The yellow troublemakers who have created a global box office myth of $5.6 billion are back to take over Hollywood and legendary monsters. Illumination's highly anticipated project 'Minions and Monsters' has unveiled its first look on the Super Bowl stage.
According to reports from The Wrap and others on the 9th (Korean time), Universal Pictures revealed the first official trailer for the new series 'Minions and Monsters' during the broadcast of Super Bowl LX (60) on the 8th and confirmed the release date as July 1, 2026.
◆ Minions Become Hollywood Stars, Breaking Taboos
This film is a sequel to 2022's 'Minions 2 (The Rise of Gru)', marking the third story in the Minions series and the seventh film in the 'Despicable Me' universe. According to the synopsis released, the movie deals with the chaos that ensues when the Minions, having conquered Hollywood and become movie stars, accidentally unleash real monsters into the world. The trailer begins with the Minions bustling around a film set, reminiscent of classic Hollywood from the 1930s and 40s.
◆ The Meeting of Cosmic Horror and Slapstick
The most shocking aspect is the lineup of monsters that appear. The trailer features the cosmic horror entity 'Cthulhu', created by H.P. Lovecraft, appearing with an octopus head and dragon body, encountering the Minions. Additionally, baby Cthulhu, a classic Fish-man with sharp teeth, a slime monster with hundreds of eyes, and a mummy that has become a toy for the Minions all make appearances, bringing laughter.
Especially due to the nature of Super Bowl ads, a unique intro captures viewers' attention as one Minion runs in panting, shouts the title, and collapses, with the sound of a monster growling in the background.
◆ The Return of 'Father of the Minions' Pierre Coffin
This film sees the return of Pierre Coffin, the voice and creator of the Minions, as director and writer, ensuring the original's fun. Additionally, acclaimed actor Christoph Waltz joins as a film director character, adding weight to the project. Illumination aims to dominate the 2026 animation market by consecutively presenting 'Minions and Monsters' following this year's 'Super Mario Galaxy Movie'.
