[Full Text of Written Interview with Writer Mo Eun-seol]
Q1. You have been active in various variety shows such as 〈Black and White Chef〉 and 〈Team Up to Win〉. The most important aspects of survival variety shows are 'realism' and 'authenticity'. I am curious about what efforts you made to maintain these two points in this 〈Fate War 49〉.
“The mysticism of riding the sword is over; now it's time to strip the soul with 'data'.”
The authenticity of survival comes from 'throwing real talents into harsh environments'. Just as in 〈Black and White Chef〉, where we evaluated solely based on taste without ranks, this time we thoroughly excluded the names and reputations of the fortune tellers. We designed an extreme device where they must guess the answers only based on the 'data' they face and their 'spiritual sense'. I am well aware of the distrust and skepticism many have towards fortune-telling. Therefore, 〈Fate War 49〉 proves 'who reads fate more accurately' through data. We aimed to experiment with the most personal and subjective subject of 'fate' using the most objective and brutal format of 'survival'. Experimenting with fate itself was the first challenge and made the impossible possible.
Q2. To enhance the immersion of survival variety shows, it seems important to show the charm of each participant in a multidimensional way. What was the biggest concern while structuring the script?
“Strange abilities? NO! The humanity of 'interpreters' who struggle in front of the 'answer' of fate.”
I did not want to just label fortune tellers as 'fortune tellers' or 'strange abilities'. I wanted to capture why they chose this path and why they feel anxious about their own future while seeing others' fates... I tried to include that human struggle. As 'interpreters' who read and interpret fate, I made an effort to reflect the human struggles and beliefs that emerge in the process of interpreting fate.
Q3. As a writer, what do you hope viewers will talk about the most after watching this program?
“A full-fledged 'self-reflection' survival that makes you think about 'my life' instead of 'reward'.”
I hope that instead of saying, “That house is effective,” they will ask, “What choice would I have made in that situation?” The word fate is enormous, but ultimately, what changes life is the sum of choices. After the broadcast, I hope it leads to discussions about whether the choices I made were fate or will, reflecting on one's attitude towards life.
