Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are returning to the Mummy series.
American media outlet 'Variety' recently reported that Universal Pictures has begun production on a new installment of the Mummy series. The Mummy series features Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz in an action-adventure story about stopping an ancient Egyptian mummy that uses dark magic. Starting with the first film in 1999, the series concluded with the third installment in 2008, following the second film in 2001. The third film attempted to shift the setting from Egypt to China, but overall it did not receive as favorable reviews compared to its predecessors.
According to Variety's report, this fourth installment is not a reboot or a new protagonist, but a new work that continues the existing series. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz will return as the O'Connell couple, and production is underway with a target release in 2028. The film will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who helmed the Ready or Not series and Abigail.
In the past, Universal Pictures released the Mummy in 2017 as part of the 'Dark Universe.' This film, starring Tom Cruise, failed at the box office, leading to a complete overhaul of the Dark Universe, resulting in a very different approach than initially announced. It seems that Universal Pictures has decided to revive the once-popular Mummy series.
