The movie 'The King and the Man', which continues its box office success unrelenting after reaching 10 million viewers, has finally surpassed the milestone of 14 million.
Surpassing 'Avengers' and 'Frozen', it rises to the Top 5 of all-time domestic releases
The film's promotional company, Allround Company, announced that 'The King and the Man' officially surpassed a cumulative audience of 14 million as of the morning of the 20th. After opening on the 4th of last month, it achieved 10 million viewers on the 31st, and today, on its 45th day of release, it set this remarkable record of 14 million.
With this, 'The King and the Man' has broken the box office records of beloved domestic films such as 'Avengers: Endgame' (13.93 million), 'Frozen 2' (13.74 million), and 'Avatar' (13.62 million). Including this work, only 5 films have surpassed 14 million viewers among all-time domestic releases.
The human connection between the dethroned king and the village chief... Warm imagination added to history
The film tells the story of the dethroned King Danjong (portrayed by Park Ji-hoon), who is exiled to Cheongnyeongpo in Yeongwol, Gangwon Province, where he interacts with the village chief Eom Heung-do (played by Yoo Hae-jin) and the villagers. On top of the historical facts of the king’s dethronement and tragic death, the film offers a deep resonance and emotion by layering the imagination of human connection with ordinary people encountered in an unfamiliar place.
In particular, the delicate performances of Yoo Hae-jin and Park Ji-hoon, along with a solid ensemble performance from supporting actors like Yoo Ji-tae as Han Myeong-hoe, Jeon Mi-do as the palace maid Mae-hwa, and Lee Joon-hyuk as Prince Geumseong, are driving the phenomenon of repeat viewings.
Next goal is 'International Market' and 'Along with the Gods'... Forecasting a reshuffling of the all-time rankings
Currently, only 4 films are ahead of 'The King and the Man': 'Myeongryang' (17.61 million), 'Extreme Job' (16.26 million), 'Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds' (14.41 million), and 'International Market' (14.25 million). At the current box office pace, it seems likely to soon break the records of 'International Market' and 'Along with the Gods', rewriting the all-time box office rankings.
Meanwhile, the cumulative revenue of 'The King and the Man' is reported to be about 134.5 billion won as of yesterday.
