David Byrne, the frontman of the legendary new-wave band Talking Heads, sharply rejected a reunion offer involving an astronomical sum, reaffirming his artistic beliefs.
■ A ‘current music’ more valuable than the temptation of $80 million
According to reports from overseas outlets on the 31st, Live Nation, the world’s largest concert promoter, recently offered a bold $80 million (about KRW 108 billion) as the condition for Talking Heads’ reunion tour and festival appearances. The deal is considered one of the highest reunion offers in the history of popular music.
However, David Byrne refused the offer without hesitation. In an interview, he said, “I didn’t feel the desire to go back out on tour or to make a new album,” adding, “Musically, I’m already completely in a different place.” Although conflicts among the members (Chris Frantz, Tina Weymouth, and Jerry Harrison) after the band’s breakup in the late 1980s were largely resolved through events such as the 40th anniversary celebrations of ‘Stop Making Sense’ in 2023, Byrne maintained his stance that recreating past glory is an artistic step backward.
■ An innovative world tour with the solo album ‘Who Is the Sky?’
At present, David Byrne is focusing on his solo album ‘Who Is the Sky?’, released last September at Matador Records, and the world tour that celebrates it. Kicking off on March 26 at the “Big Ears Festival” in Knoxville, Tennessee, the tour will continue on a long run across North America until May 17.
The performances stand out for their visual innovation that follows the success of the Broadway musical ‘American Utopia.’ Stephen Hoggett’s meticulous choreography and stage direction that uses a curved LED screen provide an artistic experience that goes beyond a simple concert. In particular, the way every performer moves freely across the stage to deliver the performance is giving audiences a fresh jolt.
■ “Nostalgia isn’t the answer”… The maestro’s decisive declaration
Through his solo career, David Byrne has achieved dazzling accomplishments, including winning an Oscar for Best Original Music (The Last Emperor) and receiving Grammy nominations. He said, “I’m not someone who wants to live in the past, soaked in nostalgia,” adding, “It can be enjoyable to listen to old songs again, but you can’t make it be exactly like then.”
