DJ Dan, a pioneer who laid the groundwork for American electronic music (EDM) and a master of house music, has died. Major outlets including Billboard reported on the 29th (local time), citing his spokesperson, that DJ Dan passed away at age 57.

According to an official statement, DJ Dan’s spokesperson said, “We announce with deep sorrow the passing of Daniel Warett,” adding that “he was one of the most beloved and influential pioneers in the history of American electronic music.” No specific cause of death has been disclosed, but given that he had remained active while maintaining good health, the sudden loss has left fellow artists stunned.

Born in Olympia, Washington, in the 1960s, DJ Dan began his career in the late 1980s within Seattle’s club scene. He later shifted his base to Los Angeles and San Francisco, where he spearheaded underground events such as “No-Doz,” eventually establishing himself as a central figure in West Coast house music.

Through his own albums, including 〈Beats 4 Freaks〉 and 〈Funk the System〉, DJ Dan not only built a distinctive “funky house” sound, but also gained recognition for his remixing skills, reworking songs by global pop stars such as Depeche Mode, New Order, Lady Gaga, and Janet Jackson. In addition, he founded his own label, “InStereo Recordings,” and headlined major global festivals including EDC and Ultra.
