With the rise of social networking services and numerous solo media platforms, the gateway for new professionals has widened. The film industry is no exception. The boom of the video platform YouTube has produced countless creators, and some of them have been brought into the commercial film system, offering audiences something fresh and surprising. With the debut of one such rising filmmaker just around the corner, here are three directors who used YouTube as a springboard to Hollywood.
Kane Parsons - Youngest Film Director, Will He Leave His Mark?

Releasing on May 27, 〈The Backrooms〉 is based on a short-form series of the same name. The person behind the series is Kane Parsons. He is better known by the YouTube channel name 'Kane Pixels,' where he posts the series, than by his real name. This notoriety began with the 2022 video posted to Kane Pixels titled 'The Backrooms (Found Footage)'. The video tells the story of someone filming with a friend who briefly trips and, when they get up, finds themselves in a completely isolated space, chased by a strange creature. The footage, which captured the terror of so-called 'liminal spaces' in found-footage format, has stirred the internet and currently has 77.53 million views. In particular, adhering to the found-footage style with a 4:3 aspect ratio and noisy, grainy footage amplified the sense of unknown dread. The 'Backrooms' concept drew on motifs from online urban legends and images circulated in internet communities, but this video is now often treated as the original source. Kane Parsons continued to post short videos that gradually expanded the Backrooms universe; 22 entries are currently uploaded. After the video's popularity, A24 proposed a feature adaptation in 2023, and Kane Parsons is finally set to make his commercial feature directing debut. He was 17 when he signed the contract, and he is 20 at the time of the film's release, which has been noted as making him one of the youngest film directors in Hollywood history. Besides 〈The Backrooms〉, Kane Parsons also created a series that used actual footage and CG to depict 〈Attack on Titan〉 as if it were a scene from real history.

Philippou Brothers - From Subculture Parodies to Feature Filmmakers

The Philippou brothers were in a different league even before their feature debut. Their YouTube channel 'RackaRacka' has around 6.95 million subscribers. They mostly upload videos that parody subculture properties and famous characters, and a common trait is extreme violence. For example, they made a short series featuring McDonald's iconic character Ronald McDonald, depicting Ronald either committing massacres or, conversely, being pummeled. They have also created VS. series that pit famous franchises against each other. Michael and Danny Philippou, twins who gained popularity by mixing bizarre comedy and gore, were (unsurprisingly) chosen by A24 and made their feature debut in 2023 with 〈Talk to Me〉. Overall, the film's tone is much heavier than their shorts and the level of violence has been somewhat reduced. They seemed to consider that audience perception differs between amateur-level makeup and professional effects makeup, even when the gore is similarly depicted. 〈Talk to Me〉 earned $48.95 million in North America and $91.59 million worldwide, becoming A24's highest-grossing horror release. They later worked with A24 on 〈Bring Her Back〉, and are reportedly preparing a sequel to 〈Talk to Me〉.

David F. Sandberg - From Animation Veteran to Horror Master

David F. Sandberg was already a veteran. However, his main field was animation and documentaries. All of the early videos on his YouTube channel 'ponysmasher' were animation projects. While he worked professionally in animation and documentary fields, he always harbored ambitions to be a film director. He shot films with a VHS camera his father bought him as a child and later even worked part-time at a video store to save up for a camcorder. In 2012 he and his wife Lotta Losten started creating shorts at home with the equipment they had. Then in 2013, under 'ponysmasher' he released 〈Cam Closer〉 and 〈Lights Out〉. 〈Cam Closer〉 captured a ghost visible only on a smartphone camera, while 〈Lights Out〉 featured a strange entity that only appears when the lights go out. His short films that explored the fear of unseen presences caught the eye of Hollywood film producer Lawrence Grey, who showed the work to director James Wan. Sandberg reportedly received many offers at the time, but he was most attracted to adapting 〈Lights Out〉 into a feature. Working with James Wan's studio 'Atomic Monster', he released 〈Lights Out〉 in 2016, making his debut as a feature film director. He went on to direct 〈Annabelle: Creation〉, the 〈Shazam!〉 series, 〈Until Dawn〉 and others.
