The first teaser trailer for DreamWorks Animation’s legendary franchise ‘Shrek 5’ (Shrek 5), eagerly awaited by animation fans around the world, has finally been unveiled. After Shrek Forever After, released in 2010, a full 16 years later, a fresh blueprint for Shrek and Donkey’s new adventure returning to theaters has now been revealed.

■ “This time, it’s the big city!”… The ‘Shrek 5’ plot and a wild comedy caper that breaks the mold
On the 17th (local time), DreamWorks Animation released the teaser trailer for ‘Shrek 5,’ putting fans worldwide on high alert. The outlines of a detailed synopsis—kept under wraps until now—were also revealed.
In this fifth installment, the story is led by Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey (voiced by Eddie Murphy), their steadfast partner, along with Shrek’s three children—two sons and one daughter—who have grown up significantly. According to Donkey’s lines in the trailer, this extended family sets off on “another whirlpool-like grand adventure” as they leave their cozy swamp and head for the big city.
Of course, as with any Shrek series, their journey never runs smoothly. In the back half of the teaser, Shrek, his two sons, and Donkey all end up behind bars due to a mysterious accident—leaving only the daughter character voiced by Zendaya outside of the trouble. The trailer also sets up a comedic scene that makes audiences burst into laughter as they force themselves to endure Donkey’s nonstop braying from within a cramped holding cell. The studio’s trademark irreverent parody spirit remains intact as well, and it’s said to include a sharp, punchline-style joke that playfully targets Disney’s mega hit ‘Frozen’, raising expectations.
■ Hollywood’s hottest ‘Zendaya’—as Shrek’s daughter?… An all-time top-tier lineup of voice talent
One reason this fifth film is drawing the biggest buzz is the dazzling casting lineup that makes you doubt your own eyes.
Return of the original family: The iconic casting—Mike Myers as Shrek, Cameron Diaz as Fiona, and Eddie Murphy as the ultimate scene-stealer Donkey—returns in full, recreating the emotional pull of the original.
Joining the new generation: Zendaya, who became Hollywood’s top star through Dune and the Spider-Man series, has been brought in on the spot as an ogre daughter who has grown up nearly as much as Shrek and Fiona’s adult selves, sparking attention.
Two sons appear: Marcello Hernández, a rising star on the U.S. famous variety show SNL, and Skyler Gisondo, who was tapped to headline the new Superman movie, lend their voices to ‘Fergus’ and ‘Farkle’—the two mischievous sons of the Shrek couple—showcasing distinctive sibling chemistry.
■ A meeting of the top brass at DreamWorks and Illumination… hunting begins in the summer of 2027
The production team is packed with big names as well. Walt Dohrn, a veteran at DreamWorks who successfully steered the Trolls franchise, previously joined as a writer and artist on Shrek 2 and Shrek 3, and served as story chief on Shrek 4, took the main director seat. In addition, Brad Ableson, co-director of Minions 2, joined as co-director.
For the production, alongside Gina Shay, producer of the Trolls series, Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri—who struck gold with Super Mario Bros.—participates as executive producer, setting expectations for a golden synergy between DreamWorks and Illumination.
Previously, ‘Shrek 5’ rocked the world after it first announced the production was confirmed via SNS in 2024, and it is now set to release in North America on June 30, 2027, before launching a full-scale run at summer theaters.
