‘Love Island USA’ Head Producer James Barker Dies Suddenly at Fiji Shoot Site at Age 40

James Barker, the executive producer who led and fueled the smash-hit reality franchise boom of the U.S. mega hit reality show ‘Love Island USA,’ died suddenly at a filming site.

On the 15th (local time), according to U.S. entertainment media outlets including TMZ and the Hollywood Reporter, ‘Love Island USA’ production company ITV America and the streaming platform Peacock said in a joint statement that executive producer James Barker ultimately died after suffering a sudden medical emergency at the filming location on Fiji’s South Pacific islands, according to an official announcement.

In the statement, the production team said, “James’s unimaginable loss has brought deep sorrow not only to the production team of ‘Love Island USA,’ but to ITV and Peacock as a whole.” It added, “He was a precious member of the family to everyone who worked with him through kindness, talent and dedication, leaving an unforgettable footprint in their hearts. We offer our sincere condolences to his bereaved family, friends and colleagues.”

James Barker, who began his career in 2011 at Leftfield Pictures, earned recognition for producing hit reality series ‘Pawn Stars’ and ‘Forged in Fire.’ He later took part in the production of Netflix’s ‘Queer Eye,’ and in 2020 joined the ‘Love Island USA’ team as a story producer.

Recognized for his outstanding instincts, he recently took the role of executive producer (EP), the top responsibility position, over the past three seasons. He supervised not only on-set production and post-production work, but also the signature soundtracks across the board that heightened audience immersion—helping the program grow into a major IP that shattered Peacock’s all-time best viewing record.

In particular, the late producer had posted a photo on his Instagram showing him smiling brightly with fellow cast members at the Fiji shoot just two weeks before his death on June 3, adding to the heartbreak. At the time, he wrote, “We come to Fiji to make magic. We will deliver a perfect and powerful story that we can fully immerse ourselves in—laughing and crying together. Enjoy this fantastic season,” and the post would turn out to be his final greeting before he died.
