Rapper Mystikal (Mystikal·55), who rose to Grammy Awards contention in the early 2000s and helped shape the U.S. hip-hop scene, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the alleged sexual assault of a woman at his home.
■ ‘Guilty plea deal’ to avoid life sentence… tried to reverse his plea just before sentencing, but ultimately received 20 years
On the 16th (local time), according to CNN and other international media, Mystikal, whose real name is Michael Lawrence Tyler, was indicted in 2022 for raping a woman at his Louisiana home and received a final sentence of 20 years in prison.
In March, Mystikal acknowledged the charge of “second-degree rape” through a plea bargain with prosecutors. The decision was made to avoid a situation in which, if the “first-degree rape” charge originally applied to him were found guilty, a life sentence would be imposed automatically regardless of the verdict outcome. While the maximum sentence for second-degree rape in court is 25 years, the plea agreement with prosecutors capped the maximum at 20 years.
However, just days before the sentencing hearing, Mystikal suddenly asked the court to let him withdraw his guilty-plea decision, sparking controversy. He argued that “he did not have a sufficient opportunity to fully consider the legal consequences and fallout that the guilty plea deal would bring,” but the judge did not accept it.
■ Victim who faced him in court “Lower the harshest sentence”… Mystikal: “If I did that, I deserve it”
Before the sentencing that day, the victim appeared in court and pleaded with the judge in tears to impose the most severe punishment that could be handed to Mystikal.
According to the victim’s testimony, Mystikal assaulted her by punching and strangling her at his home in Prairieville, about 18 miles from Baton Rouge, then tore out her hair (braided hair) and forcibly sexually assaulted her, shocking the courtroom. Hearing the victim’s cries, Mystikal reportedly answered directly in court, “If I had done such a thing to you, then I definitely deserve the harshest sentence.” After his arrest in 2022, Mystikal had been held at the Assumption Parish jail without bail and put on trial.
■ Second time serving a prison sentence for sexual crimes… hip-hop star’s irreversible downfall
A native of Louisiana, Mystikal built national fame with his distinctive, rough-style rapping starting in the 1990s. In particular, he hit his peak after his 2000 mega hit “Shake Ya Ass,” which put him up for a nomination for the Grammy Awards’ “Best Rap Solo Performance” category.
But his history of sexual crimes is not the first. In 2003, when his stock was rising, he also had a prior conviction for sexual battery. He served prison time for six years after being found guilty. Paradoxically, 2003—the year he was incarcerated—was also the year his landmark album Tarantula landed a nomination for the Grammy “Best Rap Album,” and the single “Bouncin’ Back” was simultaneously listed for the “Best Male Rap Solo Performance” category, marking the high point of his musical career.
With the justice system handing down a heavy sentence of 20 years in prison to a hip-hop star who failed to repent for his past wrongdoing and committed another brutal sexual crime, Mystikal effectively put a permanent period at the end of his music career.
