Netflix Variety Show ‘Better Late Than Single Season 2’ Reveals Differentiators to Deliver Unpredictable Thrills

Director Kim No-eun said the show’s edge lies in “laughter at awkward moves, alongside ‘real-life empathy’ that doesn’t feel like it happened to someone else.”

Netflix variety show 〈Better Late Than Single〉 Season 2 (hereafter, “Better Late Than Single Season 2”) unveiled differentiators set to deliver unpredictable excitement.

# Here comes the “national matchmaker”? A viewer-overwhelming, hype-inducing relationship reality that turns “advice mode” into immersion

Scheduled to premiere on Tuesday, July 7, 〈Better Late Than Single〉 Season 2 is a relationship makeover reality for people with zero dating experience but the highest expectations—offering a first dating challenge for lifelong singletons and fueling empathy and “name-suggesting” moments. By honestly capturing the lifelong singletons’ first dating challenge, 〈Better Late Than Single〉—which opened a new chapter for relationship reality programming—appears poised to turn viewers into “national matchmakers” once again in Season 2. Viewers will get to enjoy the fun of an empathy-driven romance reality as the lifelong singletons’ dating challenge, which can sometimes feel like advice-making because of how plainly they react to their emotions, transforms viewers themselves into “matchmakers.”

Director Kim No-eun said, “You end up laughing at the awkward moves of lifelong singletons, but it’s also something anyone has experienced once—‘real-life empathy’ that doesn’t feel like it happened to someone else.” PD Won Seung-jae said the differentiator of 〈Better Late Than Single Season 2〉 is “wanting to cheer for someone’s start.” He added, “In Season 1, for the first time in a romance program, there was a phenomenon where viewers came to cheer for every contestant. I think that point is the differentiator, and it’s also why so many people liked it.”

# Unpredictable excitement! An even more evolved “device that sparks ‘some’”

For Season 2, a variety of missions and devices have been prepared with even more careful detail. These missions and devices will help lifelong singletons with clumsy flirting naturally build a “spark.” In the “5-Minute Bookshop,” where they can learn about their partner’s information, a “new book” system has been introduced so they can check real-time levels of interest. “Better Late Than Single Post Office,” an expansion of the Season 1 mailbox, gives lifelong singletons a chance to express their feelings more actively—not only by writing letters to the object of interest, but also by offering gifts. In addition, a range of “some-sparking” devices and missions are expected to tease the singletons’ excitement, including “coupling dinners” where they eat together while wearing coupling rings, as well as special date courses designed to encourage natural conversation and laughter. Director Kim No-eun said, “We learned in Season 1 that ‘if there’s nothing, nothing happens,’ so we worked hard to improve it. We tried to create excitement in a way that doesn’t feel burdensome, while still feeling natural,” raising expectations for the evolved “some-sparking devices.”

But another charm of 〈Better Late Than Single Season 2〉 is that situations unfold in ways that differ from the production team’s intentions. PD Won Seung-jae said, “The lifelong singletons’ charm is that things always go beyond prediction.” He added, “You’ll see them saving up gift coupons they can use only in Single Village, and you’ll wonder if there’s a twist in the device made to prompt them to give gifts and express their feelings—like they’re planning and thinking their way through it the way 〈Devils Plan〉 works. I hope you enjoy together the misunderstandings that arise within it.”

# A stronger “matchmaker” reaction, from excitement all the way to nitpicking advice

Seo In-guk, Kang Han-na, Lee Eun-ji, and Kadeo Gaden—“matchmakers” who bounce between favoritism mode and razor-sharp one-liners—are the top differentiators of 〈Better Late Than Single Season 2〉. PD Won Seung-jae said, “One of the reasons it was able to be loved among so many dating programs was the existence of ‘matchmakers.’ Sometimes they cheer, and sometimes they criticize—so the chemistry among the matchmakers has grown even thicker in Season 2.” With hopes high for the reactions from the matchmakers, who are cheering for the lifelong singletons’ romance more fervently than anyone, Director Kim No-eun teased, “Kang Han-na, the ‘Mother Teresa’ who never got angry, finally got angry. On the other hand, Ms. Kadeo Gaden said she would wrap it up warmly this time, but she failed before 30 minutes even passed,” raising curiosity. PD Won Seung-jae also said, “If you pay attention to how Kang Han-na changes—even when she doesn’t lose her composure in any situation—it’ll be even more fun to watch,” pointing to additional viewing highlights.

Lastly, Director Kim No-eun mentioned “an old diary” as the keyword that expresses 〈Better Late Than Single Season 2〉. Director Kim No-eun said, “When you flip through it, embarrassment creeps in—but even so, it’s so fun that you can’t stop.” Then PD Won Seung-jae said, “People changed, the composition changed, and the devices changed too—but the point that it’s ‘the stories of lifelong singletons’ hasn’t changed. Even if their awkward and frustrated sides remain, oddly enough, it will feel like healing. And the desire to cheer—strangely—will stay the same as well,” adding, “Although it’s a feeling you already knew, please enjoy it together with a heart of cheering that’s still fun. ” He selected “familiar taste is scary” as the keyword, stoking anticipation.

〈Better Late Than Single〉 Season 2 premieres July 7, exclusively on Netflix.
