Netflix series 〈The East Palace〉 has released its main poster, main teaser trailer, and special posters, raising expectations further with the story of how Koo Cheon (Nam Joo-hyuk), who can move between the world of ghoi(ghosts), and Saenggang (No Yoon-seo), a palace maid who keeps a secret, are summoned by the king (Jo Seung-woo) and begin unraveling the curse hidden in the palace. Attention is also focused on the birth of an ideal combination for a genre drama: Nam Joo-hyuk, No Yoon-seo, and Jo Seung-woo’s meeting, as well as Kwon So-ra and Seo Jae-won, the writers of [The Guest] and [Bulgasal], and director Choi Jeong-gyu, who directed [Devil Judge] and [The Red Moon and the Blue Sea]. Global viewers are showing strong interest.

The released main poster shows Koo Cheon and Saenggang—joined as one team by the king’s command—adding to the anticipation. In the middle of a pond where a red aura from the “world of the ghoi” hangs over everything, Koo Cheon stands in place, while Saenggang—who pulls the rough rope binding him with all her strength—dominates the frame. Koo Cheon, who moves between the “world of the ghoi,” and Saenggang, who hears the sounds of that world. With the two people having abilities that seem similar but are different, it sparks curiosity about what palace secrets they will uncover—and about the mysterious yet tense actions they will deliver.

The main teaser trailer, released alongside it, draws viewers into the world of 〈The East Palace〉 with overwhelming pull. A palace filled with an atmosphere that is beautiful yet chillingly quiet. Then, ominous energy begins to creep in, and a terrifying voice of a ghoi—“I will wipe out the king’s bloodline”—echoes right by the king’s ear. Realizing that “what happened 30 years ago” is happening inside the palace again, the king calls in ghoi hunter Koo Cheon and attaches the palace maid Saenggang to watch over him. Following the king’s orders, the two move secretly, crossing the line between life and death, and the beings that appear in front of them are nothing short of bizarre and gloomy. Entering the “world of the ghoi,” with the teaser warning that “Soon, a major disaster will befall the entire palace,” Koo Cheon is surrounded by a flood of dark red ghoi energy. The more he battles ghois with sword-dance, the more the resentment and secrets buried beneath the royal court begin to lift from behind their veil, and with the palace descending into chaos it can no longer control, the teaser delivers tension.

Meanwhile, in the special posters, the curse entangling Koo Cheon, Saenggang, and the king overwhelms attention with a strong aura. Behind the three, the figures of ghois appear as if they are wailing, and the gloomy energy of the world of the ghoi creates a creepy sense of tension. In particular, beyond the boundary where Koo Cheon stands, the “world of the ghoi” draws eyes with an atmosphere that is perfectly different from the “real world” where Saenggang and the king stand, even though it is still the same palace. Faced with threats from unidentified beings, what choices will each of the three make? What exactly is the “incident from 30 years ago” that the king mentioned? As Koo Cheon and Saenggang get closer to the truth hidden in the palace—and as the king tries to end the curse—attention is on what comes next in his story.

Above all, the synergy of Nam Joo-hyuk, No Yoon-seo, and Jo Seung-woo—perfectly absorbed into their characters—is raising expectations. Director Choi Jeong-gyu, who directed the series, said, “When I first saw actor Nam Joo-hyuk, I had the confidence that he would choose to step into the world of ghoi and confront fate. 〈The East Palace〉 was the kind of work he had to lead, and I felt, along with his sense of responsibility, that his passion for acting is tremendous.” Speaking about actor No Yoon-seo, he said, “Every time I watch the works in which Yoon-seo appears, I get the feeling that something is breaking through. I became confident that her inherent appeal and strengths fit Saenggang perfectly. When we actually worked together, I found out she’s a very bold actress, and I was deeply impressed by the way she pushes through the situation with a candid, straight-ahead performance.” As for actor Jo Seung-woo, with whom he reunited through 〈The East Palace〉, he said, “Since the last time we worked together a long time ago, my dream was to work again with an actor named Jo Seung-woo. 〈The East Palace〉 is the work that made that dream come true. Jo Seung-woo prepares for acting in great detail, and I felt a kind of catharsis watching how that detail turns into powerful performance the moment filming begins,” expressing his trust.

With a distinctive world and narrative, and the synergy of the cast building expectations, 〈The East Palace〉 will be available exclusively on Netflix on July 17 (Friday).
