The evolution of a 'K-original'... a legendary musical remade as 3D animation to target global theatergoers
A legendary original musical that swept across the world beyond South Korea after its premiere in early 2005 returns to the screen. 'Ballerina Who Loved a B-Boy' is reborn as cutting-edge 3D animation, as it once again takes on the challenge of a global box-office success myth.
Original musical producer 'Shobom' said it has officially announced that it has signed a production contract for the animation 'Ballerina Who Loved a B-Boy Forever' in a decisive deal with 'MoCap Studio', a top-tier visual effects (VFX) powerhouse in South Korea.
The new work carries forward the original’s strong story about a B-boy captivated by street breakdancing and the ballerina’s fated love. With the dynamism of K-pop, the elegance of ballet, and the boldness of breakdancing combined, it is set to bring the pure yet intense romance of young men and women to the screen.
In particular, attention is focused on the 'Jang Seong-ho' director of the animated 'King of Kings', which made a big splash in the North American market last year, joining as an executive producer. MoCap Studio, led by Jang, plans to integrate advanced 'artificial intelligence (AI)' technology with distinctive VFX know-how, aiming to achieve both a production-process innovation and overpowering visual quality at the same time. The director’s megaphone will be directly held by 'Choi Yoon-yeop', the director behind the success myth of the original musical, to carry forward the essence of originality.
A Shobom official said, "A tentpole content built with the planning and technical capabilities of an all-domestic creative team from concept through final completion," adding, "It will be an ambitious project that proves the strength of a true original K-wave, carrying forward the heat for K-culture sparked by the Hollywood animation 'K-Pop Demon Hunters'." The film begins full-scale production with the goal of a theatrical release worldwide.
