Choi Min-sik as a Junior Intern? “The Intern,” Starring and Co-starring With Han So-hee, Hits Theaters on Aug. 16

A daring pairing of 37-year veteran Choi Min-sik and Han So-hee of “Young and Rich”

A towering figure in South Korean cinema, “Choi Min-sik,” takes on the role of a junior intern, meeting the breakout star “Han So-hee,” as a spirited “chief executive officer (CEO).” The bold casting lineup that flips conventions around age and rank has finally been unveiled.

On Aug. 4, the distributor “Warner Bros. Korea” officially announced that “The Intern,”” a film starring the two actors, will move onto the big screen on Aug. 16 next month. The project is a “remake” that carefully weaves the framework and sensibilities of Korean society around the eponymous “Hollywood masterpiece” that sparked a global craze that crossed borders.

At the center of the story are “Sun-woo (played by Han So-hee),” the young force at a trend-leading fashion company, and a senior intern, “Ki-ho (played by Choi Min-sik),” with 37 years of experience. Their tense clash—and warm chemistry—break down the boundaries of both job titles and generations, and is expected to deliver a fresh sense of catharsis to theatergoers. Joining them in large numbers are seasoned performers known for their depth in acting, including “Jun-han Kim,” “Hye-young Ryu,” and “Geum-soon Kim,” further raising the film’s overall density.

The original’s reputation and box-office power have already been proven in the global market. Released in 2015, the original film, starring “Anne Hathaway” and “Robert De Niro,” achieved a mega-hit profit of $194 million (about “270 billion won,”)—more than five times its production budget of $35 million. In South Korea as well, it drew “3.61 million viewers,” and solidified its status as a bible for well-made office movies.

This year, the megaphone was taken by Director “Kim Do-young” of “If Only We,” the movie that sparked a surprise box-office sensation at theaters. With his reputation for meticulous and sharp directing, attention is focused on how he reinterpreted the universal theme of “communication between generations” in a modern, polished way, and what that will deliver for the industry and beyond.
