■ “I didn’t know using the wrong royal title was disrespectful”: Immediately switches to ‘Princess Catherine’

In an episode of the podcast 'Not Gonna Lie' released on the 1st (local time), Kylie Kelce addressed the title she used when inviting Kate Middleton to appear on an earlier episode.

On her Sept. 24 episode, Kelce had issued an invitation, saying, “Princess Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, if you’d ever like to come on the show and talk about field hockey or parenting, you’re always welcome.”

After the episode aired, royal fans pointed out that “Princess Kate” is an unofficial name commonly used in the English-speaking world but could violate formal royal protocol. Kelce immediately corrected herself, saying, “It was a learning opportunity. I had no idea that calling her ‘Princess Catherine’ or ‘Princess Kate’ could be disrespectful,” and, “The right thing to do is to address someone in the way that makes them feel most respected. I apologize for my mistake to Catherine, Princess of Wales, or Princess Catherine.”

Under British royal protocol, her formal title is Catherine, Princess of Wales, and she is reportedly known within the royal family to prefer being called by her given name, Catherine, rather than the informal “Kate.”

■ “I’ll also cut back on profanity”: Sincere enthusiasm tempered by realistic expectations

Kylie Kelce expressed genuine admiration when explaining why she wanted to invite Kate Middleton onto the podcast.

“I fully understand that the Princess of Wales probably doesn’t have time to come on this little podcast,” she said. “But she is truly an amazing woman. She’s a mother raising children, a former field hockey player and someone who has recently overcome cancer. There’s so much I’d love to talk about.”

She also laughed and readily acknowledged a listener’s comment that Princess Catherine was too dignified to hear Kylie’s rough profanity and that Kelce should clean up her language and behavior. “I really do love profanity in my everyday life, but when I’m meeting someone, I know how to show the utmost courtesy according to the situation and the person I’m with,” Kelce added.

■ The Kelce family’s unexpected connection to the British royal family

The invitation grew out of an unusual connection between the Kelce family and the British royal family. Prince William personally appeared on the popular podcast 'New Heights,' hosted by Kylie Kelce’s husband, Jason Kelce, and his younger brother, Travis Kelce, Taylor Swift’s boyfriend, in July and charmed listeners with his lively banter.

Kylie Kelce’s podcast, which has featured a star-studded lineup of guests including Michelle Obama, Sandra Bullock and Jennifer Garner and won a Webby Award, is drawing public interest over whether this title-related episode could lead to another positive connection with the royal family.
