Street Fighter, the iconic fighting game that sparked a worldwide phenomenon, is finally returning as a live-action film. Set to open in South Korea on the 14th, the movie goes beyond simple entertainment, meticulously recreating the original's universe while combining it with modern action sequences to raise expectations for a polished genre film.
The story centers on Ryu (played by Andrew Koji) and Ken (played by Noah Centineo), who trained rigorously under the same master from childhood and developed a friendly rivalry. Once closer than brothers, the two go their separate ways after a series of tragic events. Their paths cross again when Chun-Li (played by Kalinna Liang), a mysterious martial arts master, appears before them and invites them to compete in the World Warrior Tournament, where the world's strongest fighter will be determined. The reunited protagonists face off against elite fighters from around the globe in life-or-death battles as they uncover a vast conspiracy operating behind the scenes.

Arcade Heroes Make a Spectacular Comeback as Hard-Hitting Action Hits the Big Screen
The film's biggest draw is the faithful live-action adaptation of characters that will stir nostalgia among fans of the original. Popular characters including Guile and Vega make appearances, while visual details such as Ryu's iconic white gi and red headband and Chun-Li's blue traditional outfit are recreated on screen with near-100% fidelity. Signature moves that have become part of gaming history, including Hadoken, Shoryuken and Hyakuretsukyaku, are brought vividly to life through cutting-edge visual effects and real-world action.
The addition of top-tier Hollywood actors also gives the film greater weight. Jason Momoa, who demonstrated commanding charisma in the Aquaman franchise, takes on the role of the feral Blanka and delivers a dramatic transformation. Roman Reigns, a leading star of U.S. professional wrestling promotion WWE, will also unleash explosive energy as Akuma, the embodiment of absolute evil.
The participation of global action star Ma Dong-seok is sure to command the attention of South Korean audiences. Ma makes a special appearance as the voice of Gouken, the spiritual anchor and martial arts master of the two protagonists. His deep, charismatic voice explains the characters' profound relationship in flashback training scenes and elsewhere, serving as a key element that further draws viewers into the story.
The production team is equally impressive. Director Kitao Sakurai, who successfully led the 2023 drama Twisted Metal, based on the popular game of the same name, is at the helm and showcases the possibilities of adapting video games for the screen. John Valera, the martial arts director of John Wick 3: Parabellum (2019), which earned praise for its hard-hitting action, also joined the project and is credited with creating artistic fight sequences that go beyond simple exchanges of punches and kicks.
