A signal of the revival of ‘live comedy’ set to reshape South Korea’s comedy landscape
The KBS, a launching pad for South Korean comedy, is moving ahead with its search for the 35th class of comedians to bring audiences new laughs.
The production team of ‘Gag Concert’ said it had posted a notice seeking new comedians and a promotional video on the show’s official website and YouTube channel, and had begun the screening process. The recruitment is drawing attention from the broadcasting industry as a full-scale revival of a system that has served as a gateway into the comedy world, producing numerous stars over the years.
The most notable feature is that eligibility is completely open. Applicants will be judged solely on their passion for and talent in comedy, regardless of education, gender, age or prior broadcasting experience. The unusual terms mean anyone determined to take the stage on ‘Gag Concert’ can apply.
Applications will be accepted through Nov. 13. Those who pass the document screening will then proceed through practical tests and interviews. Expectations are building for the debut of new comedians who could bring fresh energy to the live comedy stage, which has been through a downturn.
