The masterpiece 〈Parthenope〉, invited to the competition section of the 77th Cannes Film Festival by Academy and Golden Globe-winning director Paolo Sorrentino, unfolds a mysterious journey of the perfect beauty 'Parthenope', born in 1950, embracing the sea of Naples, as she seeks the answers of the world through freedom, youth, and love. This work is a modern reinterpretation of the Greek mythological figure Parthenope, who became a symbol and guardian of Naples, produced and costumed by the subsidiary of 'Saint Laurent', Saint Laurent Productions, raising interest, and with Dario DiAntonio winning the CST Artist-Technician Award at the Cannes Film Festival, expectations for the production have increased alongside luxurious locations spanning Capri and Naples. After a fierce audition, the newcomer Celeste Dalla Porta was cast as 'Parthenope', while Gary Oldman appears as the writer 'John Cheever', who provides her with a subtle attraction from their first meeting and delivers an astonishing realization that could change her life through several short but special moments, enhancing the desire to watch.
Gary Oldman, a renowned actor who won the Academy Award for Best Actor at the 90th Academy Awards for 〈Darkest Hour〉 and has recorded 67 awards at major film festivals worldwide, plays John Cheever (1912-1982), a master of 20th-century Anglo-American literature known as the 'Chekhov of the Suburbs' and a Pulitzer Prize-winning author in 〈Parthenope〉. In an interview with a media outlet, Gary Oldman expressed his desire to work with director Paolo Sorrentino and sent a love call. Upon hearing this, director Paolo Sorrentino obtained contact information the very next day, called, and expressed his intention to cast him, finally bringing their meeting to fruition.
Paolo Sorrentino, inspired by the diaries of writer John Cheever, who is known to have spent a lot of time in Italy, chose to place a fictional version of 'John Cheever' in front of 'Parthenope', who has just begun her life's journey. Thus, the character born from the director's meticulous contemplation, combined with Gary Oldman's interpretation and immersion, plays a significant role in 'Parthenope's' pursuit of a free life, seeking answers, and moving towards the future. After completing a fantastical time with 'Parthenope' over a total of 10 days of location shooting in Capri, Gary Oldman described the experience on set with director Paolo Sorrentino, whom he had long been estranged from, as "an experience that was highly focused yet enjoyable. The director felt like someone conducting an orchestra, and everything was fascinating."
