Actress Ruby Rose, known for 'Orange Is the New Black', shocked Hollywood on November 11 by harshly criticizing Sydney Sweeney on the social media platform Threads. Rose slammed Sweeney for her role in the biopic 'Christy', about boxing legend Christy Martin, stating, "You’re an idiot and you ruined the movie."
Released in over 2,000 theaters in the U.S. on November 7, 'Christy' recorded a dismal box office performance of $1.3 million in its opening weekend. According to Box Office Mojo, this figure ranks as the 12th worst opening for a film released in over 2,000 theaters. The film received a 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes but was largely ignored by audiences.
39-year-old Rose stated in her Threads post, "The original script for Christy Martin was amazing. It was a life-changing piece. I was set to play the role of Cherry." She emphasized the authenticity of the initial cast, saying, "All the cast members had experience with the core material, and most of us were actually gay. That’s one of the reasons I continued acting."

Rose particularly reacted strongly to Sweeney's promotional team stating after the film's failure that "Sweeney made this movie for 'the people'." She retorted, "None of those 'people' want to see someone who hates themselves pretending to be us," and added, "You’re an idiot and you ruined the movie. Period. Christy deserved better treatment."
This controversy is intertwined with several recent debates surrounding Sweeney. She was revealed to be a registered Republican this year and faced criticism when a phrase in an American Eagle ad campaign, "Sydney Sweeney is great jeans," was changed to "genes," which was accused of promoting eugenics. There were concerns that Sweeney's appearance, being white, blonde, and blue-eyed, emphasized certain racial traits.
Sweeney defended the film on Instagram, stating, "This movie symbolizes survival, courage, and hope. It helped raise awareness for many affected by domestic violence through our campaign." She emphasized, "We don’t always make art for the numbers, we make it for the impact," adding, "This experience was one of the greatest honors of my life." However, she has not yet responded officially to Rose's criticism.
