Disney has generated excitement among fans worldwide by releasing the first teaser trailer and poster for the live-action film 'Moana' on November 17. Set to be released on July 10, 2026, this project commemorates the 10th anniversary of the original animation's release in 2016.
Rising star Kathryn Lagaia will make her screen debut as the protagonist Moana. Although Auli'i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the original animation, will not appear, she will participate as the executive producer. Meanwhile, Dwayne Johnson will reprise his role as the demigod Maui, creating buzz as he performs in the live-action version following the animation. This marks the first time a Disney animation character is portrayed by the same actor in a live-action adaptation.
Respect for Polynesian Culture, Extensive Casting of Local Actors
The production team emphasized respect and authenticity for Polynesian culture by actively casting local actors. John Tui, from Auckland, New Zealand, has been cast as Chief Tui, Moana's father, while New Zealand actress of Samoan descent, Frankie Adams, will play her mother Sina, and Lena Owen, from the Bay of Islands in New Zealand, will portray Grandma Tala.
Thomas Kail is directing, with the original animation's screenwriter Jared Bush and 'Moana 2' screenwriter Dana Ledoux Miller writing the script. Dwayne Johnson, Beau Flynn, Dani and Hiram Garcia, and Lin-Manuel Miranda are producing, with Thomas Kail and Auli'i Cravalho among the executive producers.
Grand Ocean Sequences Previewed... Continuing the Emotion of the Original
The released teaser showcases the majestic landscapes of Motunui Island, the vibrant lives of its inhabitants, the shapeshifting demigod Maui, and the cute yet threatening Kakamora tribe. Notably, a scene where Lagaia declares "I am Moana" leaves a deep impression.
The film tells the story of Moana, who answers the call of the ocean and embarks on an adventure with Maui to restore prosperity to her people. While inheriting the original's core themes of identity, heritage, and self-discovery, it will also present an expanded worldview through large-scale ocean sequences and natural environments unique to the live-action film. Mark Mancina, who composed the original music, will return as the music director, and Lin-Manuel Miranda will also return to work on the songs.
