American actor and musician Donald Glover made a shocking health confession on November 23 (local time) on stage at Tyler, the Creator's Camp Flog Gnaw Festival. Glover, who performs under the stage name Childish Gambino, revealed that he suffered a stroke during his 2024 tour and had undergone two surgeries for a hole found in his heart.
Stroke Occurred During Louisiana Performance
The 42-year-old Glover explained the situation at the time, saying, "I had a really bad headache in Louisiana but still performed. I couldn't see properly."
He continued, "When I went to Houston and went to the hospital, the doctor said 'it was a stroke'," surprising the audience. He initially tried to brush off the situation as a joke, but admitted that he first felt he was disappointing everyone.
Discovery of Heart Hole and Surgery Leads to Tour Cancellation
Even more shocking was the fact that doctors found a hole in his heart. Glover stated, "There was a hole in my heart. I had surgery and had to have another surgery."
Due to these serious health issues, he had to fully cancel the remaining schedule of the New World Tour, which was scheduled for October 2024. At the time, Glover vaguely mentioned on social media that he had a "disease requiring more tests and surgeries," but this was the first time he revealed specific details during the performance. The tour was halted after only 18 shows, with both North American and European legs canceled.
Glover said he gained a new perspective on life through this experience. "People say you live two lives, and the second life begins when you realize you only have one life. You have to live your life the way you want. If I have to do this again, I can only get better."
Announcement of Retirement from Childish Gambino Stage Name
Glover, who has won five Grammy Awards, announced that he would retire the Childish Gambino stage name in July 2024. He explained, "I felt like I didn't need to build in this way anymore," adding, "I am no longer 25 years old."
As an actor, he produced and starred in FX's hit series 'Atlanta' and appeared in several films, including 'Solo: A Star Wars Story'. He revealed that becoming a father influenced his retirement decision, saying, "I feel deep joy when I put my son on my shoulders. That is real."
