The 'soul of Texas' who kept the roots of country music while embodying the rebellious spirit of punk rock has returned to the heavens.

According to reports from Rolling Stone and other foreign media on the 16th (local time), Texas country music pioneer Joe Ely passed away at the age of 78 at his home in New Mexico on the 15th. His representative stated that he had been battling Lewy body dementia, Parkinson's disease, and pneumonia complications.

◆ The Strange and Beautiful Meeting of Country and Punk

Joe Ely was not just an ordinary country singer. He formed 'The Flatlanders' in the 1970s with Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock, leading the progressive country movement. His 1978 release 'Honky Tonk Masquerade' is considered a classic of Texas music.

The most surprising aspect is his friendship with the legendary British punk rock band 'The Clash'. In the early 1980s, The Clash met Joe Ely in London and became captivated by him, touring together. Joe Ely participated as a backing vocalist in The Clash's timeless hit 'Should I Stay or Should I Go' (there's also a famous anecdote about him helping with the Spanish lyrics), and The Clash praised him as "the best combination from Texas."

◆ "He Has the Depth of Johnny Cash"

Bruce Springsteen was also a passionate fan of Joe Ely. In 2016, Springsteen inducted Joe Ely into the 'Austin City Limits Hall of Fame', stating, "He has hints of rockabilly and the depth of Johnny Cash. He is a musician with authenticity as deep as Texas roots." The two showcased their friendship by recording the track 'Odds of the Blues' from Ely's album in 2024.

◆ Singing Until the End

Joe Ely dedicated his life to music, winning a Grammy in 1999 as part of the supergroup 'Los Super Seven'. The diagnoses of dementia and Parkinson's disease in his 70s could not dampen his passion. Earlier this year, while battling illness, he released his final album 'Love and Freedom', bidding farewell to his fans.

Designated as the official musician of Texas in 2016, he will forever be remembered as the most original bridge connecting country and rock, Texas and London.
