"People remember him as a 'funny clown', but to us, he was the kindest brother and friend in the world."
On December 18, 1997, the legendary comedian Chris Farley passed away at the age of 33, marking his 28th anniversary. His brother Tom Farley has shared a heartwarming story that has not been known until now, bringing tears to fans around the world.
On the 18th (local time), Daily Mail and People reported an interview with Tom Farley to commemorate Chris Farley's 28th anniversary. Currently serving as the director of the addiction recovery support platform 'Recovery.com', Tom shared a special story to honor his brother's legacy.
◆ A 'Special Mourner' Appeared at the Funeral Home
The most touching story revealed by Tom Farley is the friendship between his brother and a homeless man. During his time living in Chicago, Chris was a close friend of a homeless man named 'Otis'. Tom recalled, "Chris always bought food for Otis and even gifted him a Chicago Cubs hat. He didn't just give him money; he sat down and talked with him as a friend."
At the funeral held after Chris's passing, Otis, dressed in worn clothes, came among the glamorous Hollywood stars. Tom said, "Otis came up to me and said, 'Chris was my friend. He would miss him,' and quietly left," adding, "That was the true essence of Chris Farley."
◆ "SNL Character? That Was Our Living Room"
Chris Farley dominated the era with unique characters like Matt Foley on 'Saturday Night Live (SNL)'. However, Tom says all of this was "not acting, but everyday life." He explained, "When Chris danced on TV with a tie on his head, I thought, 'Oh? He did that in our living room 10 years ago on Christmas!' His comedy started from a pure desire to make family and friends laugh."
◆ The Homework Left by His Brother's Death... "For Those Fighting Addiction"
Chris Farley admired John Belushi, who died from a cocaine and morphine overdose (speedball), just like his brother. Ironically, he also ended his life in the same way. To prevent his brother's tragedy from repeating, Tom is currently dedicated to helping those recovering from addiction. On the anniversary of his brother's death, he held a live virtual chat event titled 'Spending Year-End for Those in Recovery'.
Tom emphasized, "My brother sublimated his weaknesses and pain into laughter, but ultimately that pain took him away. The best way to remember him is to recall the laughter he gave us while reaching out to those in need."
Though 28 years have passed, Chris Farley's warm heart, which held the hand of a homeless friend, still lives on in the hearts of many.
