'The Actor Awards' Renamed from 'SAG', Nominees Announced... 'One Battle' Sets Record with 7 Nominations

The Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG Awards) has returned under the new name 'The Actor Awards'. The highlight of the 32nd ceremony was the film 'One Battle After Another', which set a new record for the most nominations in a single year.

According to the Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) on the 8th (local time), the nominees for the 32nd Actor Awards announced on the 7th saw the film 'One Battle After Another' nominated in an astonishing 7 categories, breaking the all-time record.

◆ 'One Battle' Dominates, 'Sinners' Follows

'One Battle After Another' showcased its overwhelming presence by being nominated for the Ensemble Award, with Benicio Del Toro and Sean Penn both nominated for Best Actor. Following closely was 'Sinners', directed by Ryan Coogler, which received nominations in 5 categories, tying for the second-highest record in history alongside 'Everything Everywhere All at Once (2023)' and 'Chicago (2003)'.

The Best Actor category is truly a 'death group'. Michael B. Jordan from 'Sinners', the two lead actors from 'One Battle', and Timothée Chalamet from the film 'Hamnet' will clash for the trophy. In the Best Supporting Actress category, Ariana Grande from the film 'Wicked: For Good' has solidified her position as an actress from a pop star.

In the TV category, 'The Studio' produced 5 nominees, earning the honor of the most nominations. This is just one short of the all-time record of 6 in the TV category ('Angels in America' etc.). In the comedy category, Selena Gomez from 'Only Murders in the Building' was nominated for the Ensemble Award, and Ebony Moss-Bachrach from 'The Bear' hinted at fierce competition.

◆ Why 'The Actor Awards'?

Last November, the guild decided to abandon the name 'SAG Awards', which had been used for 30 years, and officially adopted the nickname of the trophy, 'The Actor', as the new name. SAG-AFTRA President Joves Williams stated, "We are an awards ceremony honoring film and TV actors," and explained, "Changing the name intuitively is the clearest way to open a new chapter for the show." However, he emphasized that "only the name changes, while the format and traditions remain the same."

The 32nd Actor Awards will be live-streamed worldwide on March 1, just two weeks before the Oscars (Academy Awards), via Netflix.
