A new documentary has been released that delves into the tragic case of Andrea Yates, who drowned her five children in a bathtub in Houston, Texas, in 2001. This time, it focuses on the 'religious gaslighting' that lurked behind her mental illness.

On the 7th (local time), Investigation Discovery (ID) and HBO Max released a 3-part documentary titled 'The Cult Behind the Killer: The Andrea Yates Story' on the night of the 6th.

◆ The Preacher in the Shadows, Michael Woroniecki

The documentary highlights street preacher Michael Woroniecki, who had a significant influence on Andrea Yates and her husband Rusty Yates during her severe postpartum depression and mental illness. Co-director Julian B. Hobbs stated, "For too long, Woroniecki's role has been in the shadows," and emphasized that his apocalyptic and isolationist Christian teachings should be publicly scrutinized for possibly leading Andrea's mental state to catastrophe.

Former followers and ex-husband Rusty Yates testified that Woroniecki instilled extreme guilt and fear in Andrea through sermon tapes and letters, suggesting that "bad mothers lead their children to hell."

◆ "I Just Shared Jesus" vs "That Was Control"

Moses Storm, a documentary participant who calls himself a 'survivor', pointed out that existing media reports overlooked the crucial element of 'religious control' in this case. However, Woroniecki continues to deny his responsibility. In past interviews and his current stance, he dismissed the idea, stating, "I only shared the love of Jesus with them, and blaming my sermons for the tragedy is nonsense." He is reportedly still preaching across the United States.

◆ 25 Years After the Tragedy

Andrea Yates was convicted in 2002 but received a 'Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity' verdict in a retrial in 2006. Instead of prison, she has been confined to the Texas Kerrville State Hospital, receiving treatment under strict supervision. Despite being legally eligible for release hearings, she chooses to remain in the hospital, refusing evaluations each year.

The false beliefs and psychological domination lurking behind the horrific tragedy that took the lives of five children. This documentary warns once again about the dangers of misguided religion that delves into vulnerable mental states, going beyond a simple crime case.
