Makoto Shinkai's early masterpiece, often regarded as a life-changing animation for many, 〈5 Centimeters Per Second〉 is being reborn as a live-action film. Ahead of its release, the music video for the theme song ‘1991’, featuring J-POP icon Kenshi Yonezu, has been unveiled, stirring the emotions of prospective viewers. This live-action film is the first and only adaptation of Makoto Shinkai's works, which have created a global phenomenon with 〈Your Name.〉 and 〈Suzume's Door Locking〉.

Kenshi Yonezu's ‘1991’, Takaki's Monologue Frozen in Time

The released music video beautifully captures the time of the two protagonists growing at different paces, set against Kenshi Yonezu's unique lyrical vocals and melodies. The theme song ‘1991’ perfectly expresses Takaki's inner feelings, who remains trapped in nostalgia for his childhood spent with Akari, even as an adult, through its calm, monologue-like lyrics. Notably, the video portrays the youthful and sparkling childhood of the two, who quickly grew close through their shared interest in 'space', along with Akari's heartfelt promise, “I hope we can see the cherry blossoms together next year,” brought to life in a touching manner. As time passes, scenes of Takaki's back as he seeks the snow-covered snowy field to keep their promise in front of the cherry tree resonate deeply, blending with Kenshi Yonezu's voice to leave a lasting impression.
