The documentary 〈Melania〉, featuring First Lady Melania Trump, has simultaneously achieved extreme results of box office success and the worst ratings.
Released simultaneously worldwide on January 30, 〈Melania〉 captures the perspective of Melania Trump, the wife of President Donald Trump and a jewelry designer. It particularly focuses on her charisma by closely documenting her activities during the 20 days leading up to the 2025 presidential inauguration.
The box office performance is overwhelming. In its first week, it generated $7 million in revenue, breaking the record for the highest earnings among non-music documentaries released in the last 10 years. However, the critical and audience reception is cold. As of February 3, it has a rating of 1.3 out of 10 on the world's largest movie database, IMDb, and a mere 6% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Controversy has also arisen. It has been revealed that Melania Trump received approximately $40 million (about 57 billion won) from Amazon for production and appearance-related costs, leading some to criticize the film as not just a documentary but a 'lobbying film.' Currently, 〈Melania〉 is being screened in theaters and will later be available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
